The 1934 World Cup was the second World
Cup football tournament, which was held in Italy from May to June. The
venue was chosen after eight long years by FIFA (Fédération
Internationale de Football Association). This great event was named as “The
World’s Cup” during the event, as Italy was under the fascist
rule of the great leader Mussolini. He considered the World Cup football
tournament as a platform to build upon his official status. He even assured
the FIFA committee that Italy would offer numerous audiences and make
the event a successful competition.
From the 1934 World Cup on, a new method was set for all the teams.
Each one had to qualify in the preliminary round in order to get to the
next level of competition. Even the Italian players had to participate
in the qualifying round. Initially, there were around 32 nations entered
into the World Cup football event of 1934, and after the qualifying round
only 16 teams got into the tournament. Only four non-European teams were
selected for the next level.
The sixteen teams going onto the
next World Cup football rounds were from France, Switzerland, Argentina,
Hungary, Brazil, Sweden, Italy, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Germany,
Belgium, Spain, the United States, Egypt, and the Netherlands. Unfortunately,
1930's World Cup host and winner Uruguay did not make the cut. These
next World Cup matches were somewhat different from the earlier ones.
The first game between Spain and Italy was replayed because the match
ended with a draw of 1-1. There was no such thing as a penalty in the
year 1938, so the match was played days later and Italy emerged victorious.
The teams from Scotland, Northern Ireland,
and England did not enter the qualifying levels, because the competitions
involved only a knock-out method rather than group stage performances.
The teams were also given extra time if the game tied. In the preliminary
level, Spain and Sweden thrashed Brazil and Argentina, and Austria overthrew
France in the extension match.
The second level of the World Cup football tournament was only among
European countries. Italy beat USA 7-1 in the first day of the match.
Austria beat Hungary 2-1, Czechoslovakia beat Switzerland 3-2, and
Germany finished off Sweden 2-1. The semi-final was carried out between
Italy and Austria, and Germany and Czechoslovakia, where Italy stole
the show by winning 1-0. Czechoslovakia beat Germany 3-1, and third
place was secured by Germany crushing Austria 3-2.
The final match of the 1934 World Cup was held at the National PNF
Stadium. The game between Italy and Czechoslovakia was full of excitement.
The players of Czechoslovakia were initially in the lead with a goal
shot by Antonin Puc. However, the Italian football team somehow managed
to level the laying field before the time limit. During the extra window
of time, Italy beat Czechoslovakia by scoring another goal won the
World Cup football tournament 2-1.
